What do Woody Allen, Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, Robin Williams, and Michael Savage have in common? They all got started in San Francisco.

How did a UC Berkeley Ph.D., book author, and former New York City teacher and "Upper West Side" social worker become a firebrand conservative? And why do so many liberals listen to him just to hate him? You may hate Savage's politics, but you can't take his audience away from him!

Savage is also a huge crowd pleaser at his Paul Revere Society events. What makes Savage so unique is rooted not just in what he says as a host, but more in who he is as an on-air personality. "I'm not your father's talk show host," says Savage. "My background is somewhat eclectic. I also didn't follow the usual path to talk radio."

"Eclectic" is an understatement. Savage holds several advanced degrees in fields like medical anthropology and epidemiology (including two masters degrees and a Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley), unusual for an in your face, political talk show host. But then again, this "ex-liberal" doesn't stereotype easily as any of his listeners will tell you. He can be found holding forth on the importance of protecting the environment, railing against radical feminism, or making his case for political compassion. While many of the top talkers were weaned in radio, often with DJ backgrounds, Savage took the road less traveled, covering some very unusual territory. In his background you'll find a long list of occupations, all of which add to his ultimate appeal: factory worker, lifeguard, teacher, New York social worker, scientist, and the list goes on. Savage has also written 18 books, including Savage Nation.

All of this may explain why Michael Savage is unique, but not why he thrives in the most liberal radio market in the country. Savage has a funny, edgy, and very compelling quality that keeps you on your toes whatever your politics.
