Talkfest 2007
Nationally acclaimed talking heads Sean Hannity, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Glenn Beck, George Noory, and Clark Howard will be on hand Saturday for Talkfest 2007 at the Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk. Local morning talk show host Tony Macrini will also be a featured guest.
Talkfest 2007, a promotional event for locally-owned AM radio stations WNIS and WTAR, marks the 17th anniversary of Sinclair Communications annual celebration of talk radio in Hampton Roads. It all began in 1989 when WNIS brought Rush Limbaugh to town twice for his "Rush To Excellence" tour. The event is hugely popular and important for the stations.
“It is monumental,” said Julianne Drewry Zobel, general sales manager for both stations and coordinator of the event since 1997. “It gives us a chance to showcase our brightest stars, up close and in person, and demonstrate to the advertisers the power of new/talk radio. Whether you like the opinions of the host or not, it's powerful, engaging talk radio that pulls the listeners in for more and keeps them listening through the commercial breaks.”
This year’s Talkfest also includes a pair of charity events. Friday night from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at La Galleria Restorante, Schlessinger, Beck, and Howard will be special guests at “Help, Hope, and Heroes,” which will benefit Operation Family Fund. The charity, which helps injured military personnel and their families, will also benefit from funds raised on Saturday’s “Bikers For The Brave,” a motorcycle ride with Dr. Laura originating from Southside Harley Davidson in Virginia Beach, departing at 11:00 AM sharp.
“Dr. Laura Schlessinger was the one who brought Operation Family Fund to our attention,” said Zobel. “The strong military presence in Hampton Roads and her involvement made OFF, the obvious choice for our charitable involvement. We hope to raise a lot of money.”
